Urban Legends
An "urban legend" is a story or rumor that is at least partly false, but is widely believed to be accurate. Urban legends include horror stories (for example, the hitchhiker who turns out to be a ghost), relatively believable tales that are nonetheless false (such as a warning to watch out for gang initiations in a city; it usually turns out that there is no gang activity there), and stories that have some truth, but are mostly exaggerated (i.e., stories about huge animals - these are often normal animals that look large in photos). Some legends are intentional hoaxes, but most are simply stories that are told as fact by people unaware of their origin.
